By Andrew Rae, Fund Development Chair - Habitat for Humanity Yorkton, November 30, 2010
Despite the frightful weather, the severe flooding, the hail storms and a bit of unexpected wheat midge, the Habitat for Habitat Project 2010 actually managed to grow a crop and generate some revenue for Habitat for Humanity Yorkton.
Based on the success of the 2009 crop in Goodeve, Habitat for Humanity, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Viterra, Monsanto, Sygentia and our farm partner - Mr. Rod Wlock joined forces in 2010 to support Habitat in the Parkland region. Ducks Unlimited Canada, Yorkton Coop Agro, Yara Fertilizers, Bayer Crop Sciences, Morris Implements and our farm partner - Mr. Michael Yaholnitsky expanded this project by adding a new site by Rhein.
Rain was the norm for most of this summer and that unfortunately created incredible problems for all area farmers. The deluge was so significant that, in spite of herculean efforts of both farm partners, only one project site was successfully seeded. Much to his surprise, Rod Wlock managed to seed the Goodeve project site with food grade wheat. Despite the difficult growing season and conditions, Habitat for Humanity Yorkton's crop share is estimated at $8,500.00 (before inputs).
Due to the catastrophic conditions in 2010, the Rhein site was unable to produce any crop. We'll try again in 2011!
Reviewing the project, there is still a strong desire to partner with Habitat for Humanity Yorkton to work together to "grow homes and communities". In 2011, Ducks Unlimited Canada has once again offered to support the initiative and may even have new project sites to offer.
In 2011, the Goodeve site will be converted to grassland and wildfowl cover. We appreciate all of his hard work and thank Mr. Rod Wlock for his support. We hope to share his expertise and farming knowledge with our team in the future.
Did You Know: The idea for the “Habitat for Habitat” Project came from two local Habitat for Humanity volunteers simply having a coffee together and dreaming? Both Mr. George Plews & Mr. Alfred Labas brought the concept to the attention of Habitat for Humanity Fund Development Chair, Andrew Rae and what seemed like a crazy idea spawned the creation of a valuable funding and business partnership tool for Habitat Yorkton! Do you have a crazy idea? Are you the type of person that makes thing happen while others simply look on? Then we need you! Please call 782-8453 for more information.
